Cryopreservation
The cryopreservation center offers men the opportunity of storing their sperm for short or long term periods of time.
The main reasons behind deciding on sperm storage include:
Sperm autopreservation: A man decides to freeze his sperm before undergoing a vasectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or any other surgical procedure that may affect his fertility. Anonymous Sperm Donation: A man decides to donate his sperm thereby providing people the means to fulfill their quest to become parents. Fertility Treatments: Any person, in lawful compliance, can make use of the sperm bank in order to undergo an insemination or in vitro fertilization with donor sperm. A couple can also decide to preserve the spouse's sperm in anticipation of a future insemination or in vitro fertilization with spouse's sperm. Sperm originating from the ejaculate or from fluid extracted from the male genital tract can be frozen. Sperm is put into 0.5 or 1 ml straws (small plastic tubes), which are stored in a cryogenic container filled with liquid nitrogen, at a temperature of -196° C. Sperm stored in this fashion can be preserved for several years and once thawed, will have maintained about 80% of their motility. Moreover cryopreservation can be used to freeze surplus embryos obtained from an in vitro fertilization treatment. These embryos can then be thawed later in time to achieve pregnancy without having to undergo the whole IVF treatment. |
