Artificial Inseminations
Following your consult with one of PROCREA Cliniques' fertility specialists and having received a final diagnosis
regarding your particular situation, you and your spouse have decided to opt for a medically assisted reproduction
technique known as artificial insemination.
What artificial insemination entails
During the course of a gynecological exam, the physician will insert a thin, flexible catheter through the patient's
cervix into her uterus to deposit a sperm sample. This insertion is painless and the patient can resume her daily
activities within minutes.
The sperm inserted into the patient's uterus has been washed in the laboratory to rid it of seminal fluid and to
concentrate it.
The sperm can come from the spouse (artificial insemination with spouse's sperm AIS) or from a donor (artificial
insemination with donor sperm).
Indications for AIS
Male infertility problems associated with a low sperm count or with sperm or morphology problems
Male infertility following a cancer treatment or (in this cases, the patient has planned ahead and has had sperm
frozen prior to his treatment)
Repeated failures with ovarian stimulation
Unexplained infertility
The particulars about the preliminary stages for AIS, its treatment course and information on the complete procedure are
detailed in the Fertility Treatment Handbook given by the physician to patients enrolled in treatment at PROCREA Cliniques.
Indications for AID
Major sperm abnormalities - such as a total absence of sperm
Hereditary genetic diseases or infectious diseases that could be transmitted to the spouse
Isoimmunization or other problems
Male infertility following a cancer treatment
The sperm inserted into the patient's uterus belong to a donor who has donated his sperm to PROCREA cryopreservation center
sperm bank or to any other Health Canada approved sperm bank. For information on how donors are selected and on overall selection
requirements at PROCREA cryopreservation center, go to "Sperm Banking" from the Main Menu.
A session with a psychologist/psychiatrist specialized in fertility issues is mandatory when using a donor for the
artificial insemination process. This session will provide you with the opportunity to review issues concerning this
type of insemination and to validate your choice of using a donor.
The particulars about the preliminary stages for AID, its treatment course and information on the complete procedure are
detailed in the Fertility Treatment Handbook given by the physician to patients enrolled in treatment at PROCREA Cliniques.
